Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. Merv ratings report the filters ability to capture particles between 0.3 microns (carpet fibers) and 10 microns (bacteria and viruses). When it comes to Indoor Air Quality, the higher the MERV rating the better. MERV starts basic at 1 and escalates in efficiency from there. You will find MERV 16 through 20 at Hospitals and Nuclear Power Plants, but when it comes to your home, you are looking for a MERV between 8 and 13. Most HVAC professionals and companies recommend you replace your AC filter every three months, with one variable…the thickness of the filter. The thicker the filter, the more surface area available to collect the dust and dirt floating around in your home, and the longer they can stay in. FilterGenie recommends changing out filters 1” and 2” deep, every 90 days and filters that are 4” and 5” thick can go up to 6 months. Heres the catch…There are other factors involved. The more contributors like kids, pets, carpet, etc that you have in your home, the more dust and dirt you collect and the more you need to change your filter. For example, A home with 4 kids and 2 dogs should probably change their filter quicker than the recommended 90 day time period for a 1” filter no matter the Merv rating. A single person, with no pets or any other contributors, is just fine leaving the 1” filter in for 90 days. The best way to know if you need to replace your filter is to go look at it. If it’s gray and covered in dust and debris, it’s time for a change.

For Optimal results, we recommend the following for 1” filters
MERV 8 – Every 3 months
MERV 11 – Every 2 months
MERV 13 – Every month

What happens if I leave them in too long?

AC Filters catch the nasty stuff, its what they do. But if you leave them in too long and they catch too much of the nasties, it could cause harm to your AC unit. A clogged filter means your AC Unit must work harder to pull the air through. This can lead to a broken unit with costly repairs and an overall shorter lifespan. Overdue Air Filters will also no longer efficiently do their job and will even push the nasties back into your air for you to breathe.
